State Of The Bills: May 2nd, 2022 (Post NFL Draft)

May 2, 2022

The Buffalo Bills completed the draft this past weekend, adding eight players through the draft and several more after as undrafted free agents. The draft is the highlight of the offseason. The Bills’ roster construction will slow down significantly from this point forward. The offseason program will continue with rookie camps and then mini-camps throughout the summer.

The draft was eventful for Bills fans as the Bills participated in five draft day trades which is the most Brandon Beane has traded on draft day as the Buffalo Bills General Manager.

Due to the draft just being completed and UDFA signings happening by the day, there are no significant rumors surrounding the Bills. If anything, just random speculation about some Bills players and their long-term futures after this draft. However, nothing concrete enough to include here.

One prominent rumor we saw just before the NFL draft was that the Buffalo Bills would draft Iowa State Running Back Breece Hall. We did not see Hall come off the board in the first round, and it turns out that the Bills did not have a first-round grade on him. That does not mean they were not interested. However, Brandon Beane said in his press conference that the Bills traded up two spots because Elam was the last player on the board with a first-round grade. In the second round, Hall was drafted by AFC East rival the New York Jets. It did turn out that Buffalo was in the business for a Running Back as the Bills selected James Cook late in the second round.

The Bills will add 18 first-year NFL players and eight of them came via Buffalo’s draft picks. While no players are officially signed, the Bills have the rights to all the drafted players. The undrafted players have been reported as going to the Bills by several different sources, which you can find in a compiled list here, thanks to Ryan Talbot. Listed below are the 18 players that are now Buffalo Bills.

  • Kaiir Elam, Cornerback Florida (23rd Overall, First Round)
  • James Cook, Running Back Georgia (63rd Overall, Second Round)
  • Terrel Bernard, Linebacker Baylor (89th Overall, Third Round)
  • Khalil Shakir, Wide Receiver Boise State (148th Overall, Fifth Round)
  • Matt Araiza, Punter San Diego State (180th Overall, Sixth Round)
  • Christian Benford, Cornerback Villanova (185th Overall, Sixth Round)
  • Luke Tenuta, Offensive Tackle Virginia Tech (209th Overall, Sixth Round)
  • Baylon Spector, Linebacker Clemson (231st Overall, Seventh Round)
  • Jalen Wydermyer, Tight End Texas A&M (UDFA)
  • Travon Fuller, Cornerback Tulsa (UDFA)
  • Raheem Blackshear, Running Back Virginia Tech (UDFA)
  • Prince Emili, Defensive Tackle Penn (UDFA)
  • Alec Anderson, Offensive Line UCLA (UDFA)
  • Malik Williams, Wide Receiver Appalachian State (UDFA)
  • Kingsley Jonathan, Defensive Line Syracuse (UDFA)
  • Neil Pau’u, Wide Receiver BYU (UDFA)
  • Derek Kerstetter, Offensive Line Texas (UDFA)
  • Tanner Owen, Offensive Line Northwest Missouri State (UDFA)

The Buffalo Bills roster now stands at 85 players, which leaves five open spots for the Bills to add players before training camp. Over the coming weeks, these players will be officially signed, and potentially, more undrafted free agents who are invited to the Bills’ rookie minicamp for a tryout.

Bills In Other News

A pretty cool clip of Kaiir Elam meeting with the Bills at the combine has made its rounds on social media. The clip was a part of the Bills Embedded preview, a series that made its debut in 2018 detailing the draft process and offseason of the Bills and their front office. The clip of Elam had him pull out his notebook from his backpack and hand it to the Bills’ front office with Brandon Beane and Sean McDermott in the room. Elam explained how he believed he took the best notes in the draft class and that his notebook was filled with what he needed to improve on and scouting many of the receivers he faced at Florida. Elam also shouted through the phone when he was drafted for the Bills to put the playbook on the plan. Elam is already being pegged as a great pick by Beane and seems to be a fantastic culture fit in Buffalo.

And Elam seems to be fitting in well with his new teammates and Quarterback Josh Allen.
